In the ocean areas outside Sørøya, the possibilities for deep sea fishing are fantastic!

The main season is from beginning of March to the end of October. At this time of the year the weather and light conditions are suitable for this activity. The biggest cod fishes ('skrei') are caught during the period from March to May.

Every summer, medio July, the famous sea fishing festival is being arranged at Sørøya, at the village Sørvær. Large amount of fish is caught during the festival, the record in 1996 was a halibut with the weight of 38 kg! A married couple caught more than 500 kg of fish in just a few hours. The record made by one single person in 10 hours is approx. 570 kg. The record for the total catch done by 90 persons in 10 hours is 23.000 kgs.

However, all through the year this area is part of the best fishing grounds in the world. You will find a lot of species here, like cod, redfish, catfish, haddick, ling and halibut, and many fishing records have been set here. The biggest cod ever caught here on rod had a weight of 37.5 kg! Sørøya also hold the Norwegian record on catfish, 18.9 kg, tusk 14.6 and redfish 4.7 kg.

One of the biggest shark species in the world has also been registerated here.
